Russ Neal Presented 2019-2020 Friend of Seaford Education Award

During the November 2019 School Board Meeting, Russell Neal was named the 2019-2020 Friend of Seaford Education Award winner. Mr. Neal has been involved in the district for over 40 years, from the football chain gang to volunteering with the wrestling, track and softball programs at both the high school and middle school. Mr. Tull, Board President, presented the award and shared that, "Russell has been a great asset to our district and a huge fan of our athletic teams. He continues to volunteer with programs in the district. It is an honor to present him with this award." Congratulations and thank you for your dedication to our students and the Seaford School District.

Public Notice

The Seaford School District Board of Education will hold a public meeting for the purpose of consideration of two waivers.
The first is a waiver to the provision of 14 Delaware Code §1704 which states “Each local school board shall allocate Division 1 units to schools in its district such that as of the last school day of October each school receives not less than 98% of the Division 1 units it generates as a result of the actual unit count. A local school board may waive this subsection after voting to waive it at a public
meeting noticed for that purpose. Any school board seeking such a waiver shall do so on or before December 1st of each year.”
The second waiver is to the provisions of 14 Delaware Code §1705(A) (a) requiring any kindergarten or grades 1-3 public school classes to have no higher ratio of teacher to students than 1:22 by the last school day in October of the current school year. This ratio is only to apply to a class where students are instructed in core academic subjects of English/Language Arts, mathematics, science, and social studies. A local school board may waive this subsection after voting to waive it at a public meeting noticed for that purpose. Any school board seeking such a waiver shall do so on or before December 1st of each year.

The meeting will be held on Monday, 18 November 2019 at 6:00 p.m. in the Ashok Champaneria Board Room, 390 North Market Street Extended, Seaford, DE 19973. Citizens may present written or oral comments on the matter under consideration by the Board of Education. Citizens who wish to address the Board shall complete the "Public Participation Form for School Board Meeting" (available at the Seaford School District office during regular business hours) at least 5 days prior to the date of the meeting of November 18, 2019.

Board of Education Appoints Next Superintendent

At its regular monthly meeting on Tuesday evening, the Seaford School District Board of Education appointed Dr. Corey Miklus as its new superintendent. Miklus will be replacing the district’s current superintendent, Mr. David Perrington, who announced in September that he would be retiring at the end of December.

Dr. Miklus currently serves as Seaford’s Assistant Superintendent and has been with the district since 2014. “I am excited to continue the work that already has been established across the district,” Miklus said. “I look forward to working with the Board of Education, district staff, and families to continue to enhance educational opportunities for all of the students of the Seaford School District.”

Dr. Miklus began his career in education as an elementary teacher in the Caesar Rodney School District. He brings over 20 years of experience in education in Delaware to the position, having served as a teacher, assistant principal, building principal and district supervisor prior to arriving in Seaford as the Director of Instruction.

The Board approved a multi-year contract for Dr. Miklus. His appointment will begin on January 1, 2020 and will run through June 30, 2023.

Seaford High School Hall Of Fame Football Coach Ron Dickerson Passes Away

Seaford High School coaching legend Ron Dickerson passed away on October 5, 2019. Coach Dickerson (Captain Dick) made his mark as a coach at Seaford High School beginning in 1969 when he was hired as an assistant coach. After graduating from Laurel High, Dickerson attended Shepherd College in West Virginia where he also played football. He served as an assistant coach for the Blue Jays football program for four years before taking over as head coach in 1973. He remained at the helm for the next 28 years, winning nine Henlopen Conference titles and two State championships in 1981 and 1983. Dickerson also coached baseball at Seaford for seven seasons, during which time he won 102 games along with two State titles. The Seaford School District's thoughts and prayers are with the Dickerson family.

Homecoming Festivities and Blue Jay Pride Day Scheduled for October 4-5, 2019

Seaford High School's 2019 homecoming will kick-off Friday, October 4 with the annual Homecoming Parade through downtown Seaford, followed by the homecoming football game at 7:00pm against Washington HS (MD). On Saturday, October 5, the District will host students, families, and community partners for Blue Jay Pride Day festivities 9:00am-1:00pm at Seaford High School.
