Today, Friday, October 2, 2020 is National Custodian Workers Recognition Day. This is a day where we take the time to recognize the tremendous job our custodians do for the district. We are appreciative and thankful for the hard work our custodians have done to make our schools safe for students and staff to come back to. Thank you for everything you do.

The Delaware Department of Education has created 17 Delaware Student Success webinars which is now live and posted on the Delaware Student Success web site. A pdf listing of the session is attached to this announcement. All info, including descriptions and zoom registration info is here: www.delawarestudentsuccess.org. These sessions are for students and families. School counselors, other educators, community orgs are certainly welcome to attend.

DOE has a master calendar on the homepage, which includes our webinars, as well as admissions events from our DE IHEs, and StandByMe financial aid/FAFSA/scholarship virtual sessions.

Mr. Bill Mengel, Supervisor of Nutrition Services received the "First Chance" Award. The award recipients consist of leaders and teams that stepped up to keep feeding Delaware children when school buildings had to close from mid-March through June due to COVID-19. First Lady Tracey Quillen Carney and members of the End Childhood Hunger Task Force (ECHO) announced the recipients.

The Western Sussex Boys and Girls Clubs will host a drive thru Trunk or Treat on Friday, October 23, 2020 from 6:00-8:00 PM

U.S. Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos today recognized 367 schools as National Blue Ribbon Schools for 2020, which includes Frederick Douglass Elementary School. The recognition is based on a school’s overall academic performance or progress in closing achievement gaps among student subgroups.

The Builders Club submitted activities to Multiplying Good with Jefferson Awards. They were then nominated for the Mayors choice award for the club's Support the Troops project, which was selected by Mayor Genshaw as the award winner. This project, along with our other projects was forwarded to the Delaware Salute to Service nominating committee. The SMS Builders Club were selected as the winners for this year. A state wide project will be launched this October and is based off of the activities the Builders Club has done to support the community.

Cleaning hands at key times with soap and water for at least 20 seconds or using an alcohol-based hand sanitizer with at least 60% ethanol or 70% isopropyl alcohol content (if soap and water is not readily available) is one of the most important steps a person can take to avoid getting sick and spreading germs to those around you.

According to Delaware Department of Education Emergency Order regarding Regulation 817 Medications and Treatments, parents/guardians are not required to provide permission for their student to use hand sanitizer but can indicate to the school that their student is unable to use hand sanitizer or needs assistance with self-use of hand sanitizer.

Please let your School Nurse know if your student should NOT use hand sanitizer or will need assistance. Thank you!
